May Day or International Works Day

The first day of May is called May Day. This day is also called the International Workers' Day. It is one of the most important and significant days of the year. The day is observed all over the world. It is a public holiday all over the world. It is a glorious day in the history of working-class people. The day is observed to commemorate the historic struggle of working people. The day is observed in most of the countries of the world. The day has a historical background. The history of May Day is sorrowful. At present, the workers enjoy some privileges such as minimum wages, safety laws, and an eight-hour workday. All these came out for the sacrifice of the workers in 1886. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, people worked very long shifts in factories. They had to work fourteen or more hours a day. This is why, in the 1880s the workers called an eight hours’ workday movement. Workers of all classes joined the movement and called for a strike. On May 3, 1886, police fired on a crowd of strikers of the McComic Harvest Machine Company, in Chicago. They killed at least one striker, five or six strikers were wounded seriously, and an undetermined number of strikers were injured. If the workers did not stand up and demand their rights, they would continue to be exploited. So, the day is of much importance for the working people all around the world.
