Poet Introduction:

Christopher Marlowe was an English playwright, poet, and translator in the Elizabethan Period. He was born in 1564 in England. He was the greatest dramatist of English literature before William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was particularly influenced by Christopher Marlowe's writings. Although Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were born in the same year, Shakespeare became prominent after Marlowe's mysterious early death.  He was a University wit. He was the father of English Tragedy. He introduced Blank Verse in English drama. In 1593 at the age of 29, he was stabbed to death by a spy.

 

Lesson Introduction:

The full name of Dr. Faustas was "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus". It is called morality play. It is an Elizabethan Tragedy. It has five acts. It was probably written in 1592 or 1593. It was published in 1604. Two different editions of the play were published in the Jacobean Period.

Summary:

In this play, Faustus is a famous German scholar. He has great knowledge of medicine, law, logic, and theology. But he is not satisfied with his acquired knowledge. Because of this infinite hunger for knowledge, he began to acquire knowledge in magic. One day while he learning magic, Mephistophilis suddenly appeared before him. Faustus proposes to Mephistophilis that he wants unlimited power until he is twenty-four. For this power, he wants to sell his soul to Lucifer. Then he makes a deal. He aspires to gain more power than God. This ability leads to Lucifer's downfall. And the end of the play, he begs for forgiveness but is forced to accept death.
